Our History
The first fire station was a two-story building built on the corner of Zieter Way and Lincoln Avenue. In 1935, that building was torn down after a new three-bay-block building was built to the east of it. The department was housed at that location with until October 6, 1979, with two additions being made prior to the transition.
The first medic units were housed in a heated garage furnished by Floyd Harper and Marco Chemical. A permanent station was built in 1975 at 217 Chestnut Street, and was further expanded to add another apparatus bay, training room, and offices in the 1980s. The building is now repurposed as the Swanton Community Center.
In 2012, the need for two stations on either side of the railroad tracks was made unnecessary by the completion of the overpass on Hallett Avenue. Presently, all Fire and EMS apparatus and personnel are housed at 432 Church Street. The station was updated to accommodate 24 hour full time staffing of a full engine crew, along with ambulance personnel. Eight bedrooms were created out of the previous area.
